Peel Ports injects £3m into Liverpool terminal
Peel Ports in the UK has announced that it is investing £3m to upgrade its steel terminal at the Port of Liverpool – a strategic move by the operator to get ahead of its competitors with steel storage and distribution.
In fact, the warehouse optimisation technology sorts, tracks and stages steel coils so efficiently that warehouse space requirements are reduced by 30 to 80%.
CareGo owner and president Demetrius Tsafaridis says his company is very pleased to be working with Peel Ports on this important project, adding that it led him to open a new global ivision called CareGo Logistics UK.
“Our software reduces costs and increases efficiency for warehouse operators,” Mr Tsafaridis said to Port Strategy. “It is operated with a single employee per shift, has a perfect record of damage-free storage and offers warehouse customers real time inventory reporting so they can track their order from ship to door”, he said.
The improved facility will boast latest generation CareGo warehouse optimisation and crane automation technology, courtesy of Canadian supply chain expert, CareGo.
A fully automated warehouse and interactive customer web portal will mean that customers will have round the clock access to their orders, including order tracking, real time stock availability, precision coil selection and a vehicle booking system – bringing everything together in one place.
Peel says that the main reason for making the investment is to save customers money by minimising paperwork, handling and haulier turn around times.
The Port of Liverpool is of course strategically placed to benefit from export trade from the UK’s manufacturing industry – and ultimately this new improved facility could increase throughput.
The new Liverpool Steel Terminal will be open for business in April 2013.
