Spain’s Órbita Ingeniería has launched a new quay crane optical character recognition (OCR) system to automate freight container identification and damage inspection during loading and unloading.

The automation technology and engineering company’s new system, Órbita CraneOCR, provides real time ISO code recognition for 20ft, 40ft, 45ft and twin 20ft containers as they are moved to and from multiple lanes under and behind ship to shore (STS) gantry cranes.

“This system will eliminate mistakes in the container handling while in the cranes. This means less crane movements and faster processing. Combined with our GateOCR solution in the land gates, we will eliminate mistakes in the container processing within the terminals completely,” Francisco Grau Cavanillas, account manager, ports and terminals, Órbita, told Port Strategy.

The company says acquiring OCR data in this way will allow terminal operator to automate container identification on the quayside with minimal infrastructure – as few as four cameras are required – and no impact on STS crane cycle times.

“The system is now fully working in the Port of Valencia, providing excellent results. We’re starting to receive interest from major operators, both Spanish and international,and expect to begin commercialisation very soon,” Mr Grau Cavanillas added.

Users can also view images, videos and performance reports in the Órbita GateViewer software, allowing land gate and sea gate statistics to be collated for advanced management analysis.
