Green footprint a priority

It has made a corporate undertaking to continuously evaluate the environmental risk factor of all its operations.

That philosophy translates to actively working to decrease the environmental impact of its terminal activities and to reduce the use of energy and natural resources per transported unit.

The embodiment in practice is the Castor Green terminal concept to extend its zero emissions ambition and proactive environmental policies from its ocean operations to port and land activities.

WWL’s Castor Green ‘low consumption – no emissions’ philosophy aims to integrate various ‘building blocks’ to reduce environmental risks and impacts from port activities.

These building blocks include the strategic location of the terminal, a compact layout and design to reduce land usage and cargo movements, construction using recyclable materials, employing renewable energy and lean production techniques, and recycling waste to generate heat when possible.

Past experience operating terminals across the globe is being put to use in the application of solutions such as photovoltaic solar panels and wind turbine installations.

While WWL accepts its environmental goals are ambitious, it also believes they are realistically attainable.

“Our goals are measurable as much as possible so we can track our environmental performance and identify areas for future improvements.

“We are committed to complying with both national and international environmental legislation, regulations and other requirements. However, our ambition is to always be that vital step ahead of any requirements by quickly implementing environmental procedures and proven technology we believe will lead the way in our industry,” the company says.

New WWL terminals, for example the Melbourne project for which WWL is currently bidding, will follow the Castor Green terminal standards.
