Kalmar unveils hybrid first

Kalmar has launched new hybrid straddle and shuttle carriers for container handling, which use up to 40% less fuel than existing machinery.

The new hybrid range, which the company says is the first of its kind, consumes less fuel and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by over 50 tonnes per year compared with a traditional diesel-electric machine.

“In designing our next generation machines, we have been guided by the port and terminal industry’s requirement for low total cost of ownership, environmental sustainability, excellent usability and ergonomics, safety, productivity and automation,” said Dr Tero Kokko, vice president, Horizontal Transportation, Kalmar.

A regenerative energy system converts electrical braking and spreader-lowering energy into electric power, stored using state-of-the-art battery technology.

An automated start-stop system chooses the optimal balance between engine and battery power, extending engine and generator lifetimes as well as maintenance intervals.

All carriers can be equipped with remote connection and monitoring and can be automated to a level based on the terminal’s needs.

The cabins have also been redesigned to provide more space and new window geometry, reducing night-time reflections.

Kalmar company recently secured a contract to supply one of its new generation hybrid straddle carriers on a rental basis to MSC Home Terminal in Antwerp, Belgium. It will also supply five of its electric straddle carriers.

The new units will be delivered in February 2014.
