Samskip expands intermodal network
Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal is expanding its intermodal network by adding rail shuttle services between Duisberg in Germany and Copenhagen in Denmark.
The new service will link Copenhagen up with Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain and Samskip says that will offer a more environmentally friendly and sustainable transport solution for unitised cargo travelling between these destinations.
Johan Logtenberg, managing director, Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal, told Port Strategy: “The new service avoids the German toll road and with this service we are able to provide a unique intermodal link on every day of the week making a lead time of only two days possible.”
Mr Logtenberg explained that the new service will also take a considerable number of units off the road and limit the impact on the environment as much as possible.
“The distance to and from the terminals in Germany and Denmark is very short so we hardly need road haulage”, he added.
Samskip has a pan-European multimodal network via rail, shortsea, road and inland waterways. By combining its rail services with modern trucks, Samskip says that it offers a green door to door transport service covering today’s cargo needs and catering for future growth.
