Savonna and Genova merger mooted

As part of the government’s spending review, it has been suggested that the number of port authorities in Italy should be reduced from 26 to 14 by mid-May at the latest.

Currently, Liguria has three – Genova, Savonna and La Spezia – of which only the latter is expected to retain its current status.

By 2017, the new Vado container terminal is expected to open at the Port of Savonna and is expected to attract calls from the P3 alliance.

At present, CMA CGM calls at Voltri, MSC makes uses of La Spezia, but will move some traffic to Genova Sampierdarena, while Maersk, which also makes use of Voltri, is the promoter of the Savonna hub.
