Rijekas AGCT nears completion

The Rijeka Port Authority has funded the construction of a new 628m quay in tandem with comprehensive investments from AGCT, an ICTSI subsidiary.

In addition to offering the ability to receive deep draft mainline vessels, explains Vlado Mezak, executive director, Rijeka Port Authority, overall terminal capacity has been raised to a level of 450,000 teu per year and will rise to 600,000 teu at the beginning of 2015 when construction works on AGCT’s new intermodal yard are completed.

Handling equipment throughout the terminal has been upgraded with the installation of two new post-panamax ship-to-shore gantries, six rubber-tyred gantries and two rail mounted gantries to serve the intermodal yard. The new generation Navis N4 terminal operating system has also been installed.

AGCT, according to Mr Mezak, is completing its development programme in a timely manner capitalising on Croatia’s membership of the EU and the associated liberalisation of the rail sector. Container traffic has shown healthy growth in the first quarter of 2014 and is expected to accelerate as cargo shippers and lines tap into the service and cost advantages of using AGCT as a gateway to Central and Southern European markets.
