Maher loses out at NY-NJ
According to US District Court documents, Maher Terminals has lost its bid to cut the fees it must pay the port authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).
Maher first lodged the complaint back in 2008 which details PANYNJ as having violated and continuing to violate the Shipping Act by failing to fulfil its absolute statutory duty to provide Maher preferential lease terms as provided to Maersk-APM previously.
It also has a complaint that PANYNJ has failed to establish, observe, and enforce just and reasonable regulations and practices.
It’s as yet unclear what Maher’s next steps will be and the operator has yet to make comment to Port Strategy.
But PANYNJ meanwhile declined to comment on the issue saying it is a matter for the US District Courts.
Meanwhile, the PANYNJ has announced that cargo volumes at NY-NJ set a record for the first six months of 2014 – a 4% growth in container traffic.
It’s investing well over a US$1bn to ensure that the port maintains its competitiveness. It said it will continue to work with all of the port’s stakeholders to ensure that “the port remains a leading destination for international shippers on the US east coast.
Maher Terminals has been owned by Deutsche Bank since 2008 under a purchase granted by the port authority.
