Crane automation at Long Beach
International Transport Service (ITS) will be automating its cranes at its Long Beach terminal in California, US, in order to improve accuracy and customer service.
The operator has chosen to install a crane OCR solution from APS Technology Group, part of the ABB Group, which automates the process of identifying and verifying ISO containers loaded and discharged from dockside ship-to-shore (STS) gantry cranes.
Ken Southerland, director, IT, ITS, said: “We recognised the need to update our OCR technology because the previous vendor’s existing solution was difficult to support and system accuracy was below acceptable levels by today’s standards.”
The automated container solution at the ITS Long Beach Pier G terminal will consist of 12 STS Crane OCR systems and X-Clerk Exception Management system. It will fully integrate with ITS’ proprietary Terminal Operating System for seamless data exchange.
Installation of the new system is expected to start in September and will be completed in early 2015.
