More Kalmar RTGs for Poland

Kalmar is to supply five of its latest generation zero emissions rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) for Poland’s Gdynia Container Terminal (GCT), in preparation for its expansion.

GCT has chosen the 41 tonne capacity E-One² zero emission RTG, which stacks 6+1 wide and one-over-six high. Compared to conventional diesel-powered RTGs, Kalmar says this model produces lower emissions, while its electric power system eliminates the need for engine maintenance, which results in lower downtimes and reduced maintenance costs.

“We have plans for expansion at the Port of Gdynia and it’s vital that we have the right equipment and business partnerships in place to fuel this growth,” Jerzy Czartowski, chairman of the Board, GCT.

“Kalmar has always demonstrated a thorough understanding of our operational needs and has presented solutions that precisely meet our requirement. Following the delivery of two fully electric RTGs earlier this year we were impressed with their performance and the remarkable cost-saving attributes,” he added.

The delivery will include the Kalmar SmartFleet process automation solution, said to improve operational transparency and reduce downtime through remote equipment monitoring and reporting.

In addition, the RTGs will features the Kalmar SmartRail automatic gantry steering system, which allows the operator to concentrate fully on driving and manoeuvring the containers, therefore improving safety and operator performance.

GCT is a full-service container facility located in the Port of Gdynia on the coast of the southern Baltic Sea. It serves as a feeder port connecting Poland with hubs in Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Rotterdam as well as a load centre for intra-Europe short-sea cargo.

Delivery is scheduled for December 2015.
