PSA partnership leads to Kalmar order

PSA Sines and Cargotec’s Kalmar have partnered on a trial of semi-automation technology for rubber-tyred gantry cranes at the operator’s container terminal in Portugal.

PSA Sines has piloted one remote control desk and has placed an order for a further seven desks to operate its fleet of 11 Kalmar RTGs, delivered earlier this year.

“We are delighted to be able to support PSA Sines in their expansion and to work together to implement this remote control technology on the new RTGs,” said Tommi Pettersson, vice president automation at Kalmar. “Once the semi-automation is deployed, we expect it to provide measurable improvements in productivity and efficiencies.”

In related news, the manufacturer has won an order for nine zero-emission electric RTG cranes for Piraeus Container Terminal in Greece. The order marks the second from the COSCO-operated terminal.

Delivery of the 9+1 wide RTGs is scheduled for 2016.
