Spanish unions criticise “unsustainable” reforms policy

The general assembly of the Spanish port union Coordinadora has labelled the governments policy towards port reform – which has been forced upon it by the EUs Court of Justice – as both “unstable” and “unsustainable” for ports.

The government has given itself six weeks to study proposals put forward by the unions, after which it intends to come up with a consensus plan for reform.

The union’s general secretary, Antolín Goya, warned that delays were leading to instability, which he said was a port’s biggest enemy.

“Investment, growth plans, the attraction of major shipping lines… these are only possible if the situation of ports is stable, [and] if there is a security framework in place. As a result, the current situation is beginning to be unsustainable,” he told delegates.

Ever since the decision of the Court has been made known, Coordinadora has stressed the need for dialogue to resolve current difficulties.
