US Coast Guard in support of Port Ambrose

The controversial LNG terminal development at the US East Coast Port Ambrose is making progress after gaining support from the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) and US Coast Guard (USCG).

The proposed offshore energy project will import LNG into the New York and New Jersey Regional Market

The USCG issued its final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed deepwater port, which confirms that the project is needed, the location is safe and the impacts to the environment are minimal.

The developer of the project, Liberty Natural Gas LLC, has come under fire since first submitting its proposal three years ago, and not everyone’s happy with the recent support. The governors of New Jersey and New York are reportedly reviewing the proposal but are being urged by environmentalists and state legislatures to veto the port.

The proposed offshore energy project, to be located roughly 19 miles off the coast of Long Island, New York and roughly 28 miles from New Jersey, will import LNG into the New York and New Jersey Regional Market primarily in the winter season.

Apparently, the port would provide an average of 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and would result in millions of dollars of savings for natural gas consumers.

The application process is now coming to an end, with a final decision likely to be made in December or January 2016.
