Unions target Macquaries Gdansk terminal

They will aim to demonstrate their objection to the poor treatment of workers in the Port of Gdansk, Poland.

The protests are set to take place at Macquarie offices so there is said to be no impact on port operations.

A spokesperson from ITF told Port Strategy: “In terms of the impact. The aim of these demos is to draw Macquarie’s attention to the part they could play in intervening in the dispute in Gdansk and to secure a meeting between them and union representatives to that end.”

The first demonstration took place in Frankfurt, Germany on Monday 1 February at 13:00 local time, with the second beginning in Luxembourg on the afternoon of Tuesday 2 February.

Members of the union, and affiliated union Solidarnosc, who work at Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) Gdansk have faced constant obstruction from their employer of the past two and a half years.

There is also concern over the number of union leaders and activities who have had their contracts of employment terminated during this period.

Torben Seebold, vice chair of the ITF dockers’ section, said: “Solidarnosc members at DCT are seeking a decent collective bargaining agreement, reinstatement of their representatives and colleagues.”

“As well as improvements to pay and contracts of employment. Macquarie can help make that happen,” he concluded.
