Rotterdam tests hybrid locomotive
Alstom Transport, in cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam Authority and Rotterdam Rail Feeding, has set up a trial using a hybrid shunting locomotive, something that has never been done before on such a scale.
Alstom expects to achieve fuel savings of at least 40% and to halve the volume of CO2, NOx and particulate emissions. Noise will also certainly be reduced by 15 dBa and the company is counting on reducing maintenance costs. The trial aims to find out to what extent the figures are correct in practice. During the two-month test period the locomotive will be pulling trains from the Bertschi Terminal to Botlek rail yard four kilometres down the line. Rotterdam Rail Feeding will actually be operating the locomotive. Alstom and SGS Nederland will be measuring the exhaust emissions, which will then be analysed by SGS. This technical innovation saves money and contributes to the objectives of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative and the RAP/RAL regional environmental programme.
