Governing 21st Century Ports

The theme of the 2008 ESPO Conference is “Governing 21st Century Ports”. The event will gather know-how from European and international port and academic experts on the strategies and tools port managers have at their disposal to respond to these challenges.

Attention will be paid to strategies that stretch beyond the traditional landlord function, the management of port property and port performance measurement. Particular focus will be on the use of concessions as governance tools. The two-day conference will conclude with an update on the implementation of the European Commission’s new ports policy. The conference will also feature a political debate with Members of the European Parliament on the question whether the hanseatic spirit is still present in the business climate Europe is shaping for the development of ports. Giuliano Gallanti, the ESPO chairman, will officially open the conference on Thursday lunchtime, 29 May. It will finish on the afternoon of Friday 30 May, after a tour of the port of Hamburg.

The ESPO 2008 Conference is organised in cooperation with Hamburg Port Authority and Port of Hamburg Marketing. It will take place at the Atlantic Kempinski Hotel, Hamburg, from Thursday 29 May to Friday 30 May 2008.
