Green initiatives from Tratos

Tratos have supplied cables for use in AMP systems, to minimise emissions from ships in port, cables for alternative energy including TratosEolo for wind farms throughout Europe, and TratosIcarus for Solar installations. Tratos have also developed cables with increased pulling tension, allowing easier electrification of diesel RTG cranes. For many years, the company has worked on producing cables without halogens, to provide protection for people working with its cables, and the environment. Since 1980, Tratos has been using clean renewable energy from its own hydroelectric plant. In 2001 Tratos started producing “TratosGreen”, a cable made using only hydroelectric energy. The companies high voltage facility also incorporates a solar power supply. Since 1988 Tratos have had a policy of recycling and are currently working on using scrap to supply clean energy via pyrolysis. Tratos was the first cable manufacturer to receive environmental approval from BASEC (BA2250:1996-2) and also has approval from UL, VDE, Lloyds register (inside ships), and GOST approving sales in Russia. Tratos export director Maurizio Bragagni says “We approve of the Kyoto agreement and see it as not a question of politics but underlying mentality. For us respecting the environment is not just an abstract idea, for people living in the Tuscan countryside it is a philosophy of life.”
