GTI expands its green operations

This latest order, delivery of which will commence in January 2009, follows on from a contract to supply GTI with 29 E-One RTGs delivered in 2006. The Port of Jawaharlal Nehru located at Nhava Sheva was created to add capacity in the Mumbai region and currently handles 65 percent of the container traffic in India. GTI is the largest of the three container terminals operating in the port. The terminal has a stated capacity of 1.3 million TEU and runs with modern equipment. It has eight post Panamax twin pick cranes with an 18-wide outreach, 29 Kalmar E-One RTGs, three rail-mounted gantry cranes, reach stackers, empty handlers and a fleet of tractor trailers. The container terminal employs state of the art information technology systems to increase productivity. GTI reaches out to the needs of the trading community adding the much-required terminal capacity for customers both in the Mumbai region and the rail connected northern hinterland. GTI is a joint venture between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR). GTI was one of the first customers in Asia to order Kalmar’s green E-One series RTGs, of which well more than 300 units have been delivered worldwide. As one of Kalmar’s Pro Future solutions encompassing all of the company’s environmentally friendly equipment, the EOne+ RTG meets the toughest ecological standards on pollution, discharges, noise, safety and working environment. It is equipped with a low-emission diesel engine and all-electric trolley, wheel turning and spreader. This ‘all-electric’ concept, without the need for hydraulics, means that parts are easy to access and fewer components than ever require maintenance.
