Gothenburg shore-side power tax reduction

This news comes as a result of the EU permitting Sweden to make an exception to the Energy Tax Directive. This enabled the Swedish Government to cut the tax on power down by 98%.

Åsa Wilske, environmental manager at the Port of Gothenburg, said: “It is with great pleasure that we are able to offer our customers technology that is not only environmentally adapted but is also financially attractive. Our hope is that this will lead to us achieving our vision that all ro-ro vessels and ferries are connected to a shore-side power source whilst at berth in Gothenburg.

“Hopefully this will also inspire other ports and shipping lines to begin using this technology”, she added.

Shore-side power is generated using wind power and is a replacement for power generated using auxiliary diesel engines vessels at berth.

This means less emissions – sulphur dioxide and nitric oxide are eliminated completely, and less noise resulting in a quieter port environment.

Currently, one in three vessels at the port use green shore-side electricity.
