Gothenburg to host European Maritime Day

The European Maritime Day, celebrated on 20 May each year, seeks to showcase the importance of the sea and oceans, both in coastal communities and across Europe as a whole.

The European Maritime Day annual conference, which is dealing with the ocean, water and marine environment, will take place for the first time in Scandinavia and the North Sea region. The conference attracts politicians and leading industry figures from all over Europe and will take place on May 21 and 22. Under the title “Sustainable growth from the oceans, seas and coasts: blue growth”, the conference will focus on marine and maritime innovation, sustainable use of healthy seas and maritime surveillance.

During the first day of the conference, innovations, ocean planning, transport, energy and safety issues will be on the agenda, all viewed from a sustainability point of view. On the second day of the conference, there will be 24 parallel workshops run by different stakeholders.Besides the stakeholder conference, several other events will be organised across Europe.

The next editions of the European Maritime Day will be organised in Valetta in 2013 and in Bremen in 2014.
