Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce begins operations

MSC Sasha is the first of ten ships to call in a weekly service launched by MSC and Hapag Lloyd, which connects the US East Coast and Europe with the West Coast of South America.

Miguel Abisambra, chief executive of Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce, said: “The commencement of operations at Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce marks a crucial milestone in Colombia’s port infrastructure, and is the result of a successful collaboration between foreign port partners and local stakeholders. It is also made possible because of the hard work and contribution of hundreds of workers – the majority from the communities of Buenaventura.”

Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce is a joint venture between International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) and PSA International, designed and built to serve very large container ships with a capacity of up to 18,000 teu.

It aims to set new standards in cargo security and productivity, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, operating systems, and high quality facilities and warehouses which have been designed to receive and process various types of cargo, including coffee and sugar.

Construction on the terminal is expected to be fully completed by the first quarter of 2017.
