Peel Ports meets Cargo200 target

Peel Ports has announced that it has met its target of securing 200 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative, which encourages shipping lines to introduce direct deep-sea services to the Port of Liverpool.

Warburtons and EMR joined Peel Ports to make the announcement at this week’s Multimodal in Birmingham, UK, and underline the benefits to cargo owners that ship goods to and from the north of the UK.

Patrick Walters, Peel Ports’ chief operating officer, said: “We set out two years ago with an ambitious aim of recruiting 200 advocates for direct deep-sea services via Liverpool. Logistics providers and cargo owners want to reduce costs, congestion and carbon emissions in their supply chains, and their support for us underlines the benefits offered by our new Liverpool2 deep-water container terminal.”

The initiative has attracted leading names from both UK and international markets, including Diageo, Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley and Typhoo.

Having now met the target for recruiting 200 supporters, Mike Dwan, sales manager at Peel Ports, told Port Strategy that the company aims to continue amassing advocates.

“Cargo200 was always set out to represent demand in the north and for further connectivity, further services through the Port of Liverpool,” he said. “Two hundred partners was always a minimum target. We’re going to carry on pushing that, gaining support and gaining momentum for the north west.”
