New RTG cranes to help KCT rail container handling

Paceco España has signed an agreement with KCT, based in Lithuania’s Port of Klaipeda, for the 16-wheeled transtainer Volvo diesel cranes.

With a width of 6+1 containers and height of 5+1, the cranes can handle 41t containers under a spreader, said Paceco España.

About 15% of containers arrive and depart from the terminal by rail currently but KCT anticipate this will increase with the growing popularity of rail transportation.

Key features include the structural stability of the transtainer, rope reeving stiffness, a micro-motion concept and cabin ergonomics.

KCT serves 40-50 container ships per month. It handles about 12% of all dry cargo shipped through the Port of Klaipeda and 60% of containers.

The total container throughput in 2016 totalled 263,529 teu, a 13% growth compared to the previous year.

KCT also has a Ro-Ro and general cargo terminal.
