Port of Savannah expansion approved

The Authority’s board approved a $42.27m investment as part of the Authority’s $128m Mason Mega Rail Terminal project, a venture that will double the Port of Savannah’s on-dock rail capacity and position Savannah to quickly increase service to a number of inland markets from Memphis to Chicago.

In all, $90.7m has been set aside for the project so far, with construction scheduled to start next month and be finished by the end of 2020.

“What makes Georgia and the GPA a continuing success story is the relentless effort to stay one step ahead of the curve and the competition,” GPA board chairman Jimmy Allgood said.

“The projects approved today will do exactly that.”

The GPA board also approved a $13.2m venture to expand Garden City Terminal’s Gate 8.

The initiative, which will expand the terminal’s gate infrastructure by 12.5% for 54 truck lanes in total, will help the Authority absorb growth in the future and improve a connection to Interstate 95, the main Interstate Highway on the US East Coast.

“In addition to expanding capacity, we will also reduce the impact on our local community,” Mr Lynch explained.

“The new pre-check lanes will reduce truck congestion and the Mega Rail Terminal will significantly reduce or eliminate rail crossings.”
