Electric crane reels driving efficiency
New cable reel technology that provides electrical power for high reach ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes is boosting green efficiency.
Eight electric-powered reels supplied by Cavotec will be used by ZPMC cranes at the Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), enabling the container terminal to optimise productivity and safety and reduce the environmental performance of its container handling operations.
The reels are fitted with drums measuring 6.4m, and eight spreader reels with a maximum lifting distance of 73.5m.
High lifting distance
Cavotec said the cranes boast the highest lifting distance of any STS cranes operating globally and are also believed to be the second tallest STS cranes currently in service.
Cavotec recently also built one of the world’s largest mono-spiral motorised cable reels, with a drum diameter of 9.2m, for several ZPMC STS cranes installed in ports in Asia and Europe.
Last year, it worked with the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) to supply a mobile shore power cable management system, AMPMobile, that has been used to connect a major cruise ship to electrical power.
The company’s automated mooring technology ‘MoorMaster’ has helped support the faster mooring of vessels at the Port of Salalah since 2016.
Cavotec’s electrical cable reel technology can be used on STS, RTG, ASC, RMG and mobile harbour cranes.
