Gothenburg combi terminal improves efficiency

The 65,000 sqm Arken Combi Terminal has been designed to increase freight capacity at the quayside, improve transport efficiency and reduce emissions – as more than 100 trucks a day can avoid travelling through traffic in central Gothenburg.

Magnus Kårestedt, Gothenburg Port Authority’s chief executive, said: “The Arken Combi Terminal is a long-awaited piece in the puzzle at the Port of Gothenburg.

“The market has been looking for ways of handling more goods more efficiently… At last we have a solid intermodal solution in place.”

More trains

The terminal, located beside the container and Ro-Ro terminals in the outer port area, has been in operation since the turn of the year and already handles more freight with seven trains per day, two more than the old terminal at Gullbergsvass, central Gothenburg.

This figure is expected to increase shortly, with more than 100,000 trailers a year expected to change from one mode of transport to another at Arken.

The Swedish Transport Administration is co-funding Arken with the Port of Gothenburg and will use the old terminal to construct The West Link, an 8km double-track rail link through the centre of Gothenburg.
