Cargo giant tackles carbon

Cargotec aims to reduce the CO2 emissions of its value chain by 1m tonnes by 2024. The company aims to become the global leader in sustainable cargo flow following its previous focus on digitalisation.

“The importance of sustainability has significantly increased in our customers’ operations and we lift it into our vision,” said Cargotec’s CEO Mika Vehviläinen.

He added: “Our key business driver is to reduce the carbon footprint of the logistics industry. We want to do our part to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. By realising our strategy, we acknowledge our responsibility to innovate and offer low-carbon business solutions that enable a sustainable path for the logistics industry.”

Strategy progress is measured by financial reporting, leadership index, eco portfolio share of sales and, in the future, CO2 emission reduction and the net promoter score as well.

In 2020, Cargotec’s eco portfolio solutions constituted almost a quarter of its total sales.

Kalmar deal

Cargotec’s Kalmar business has signed a contract with DP World Southampton to supply 11 hybrid straddle carriers for use at their container terminal.

The hybrid straddle carriers enable significant reductions of both the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of a terminal’s straddle carrier operations when compared to using traditional diesel-powered machines. Hybrid machines also generate much less noise. The machines will have a four-high stacking capacity and a lifting capacity of 40 tons.

Delivery is scheduled for Q4 of 2021. 12 Kalmar hybrid machines were also delivered in 2020.
