China relaxes rules on cross-Strait trade

The Ministry of Transport in China is to relax current rules that restrict vessels operating between China and Taiwan from carrying transhipment cargo or cargo emanating from other countries.

Empty containers can also be carried for companies that do not have permission to operate cross-Strait shipping links.

This brings China into line with Taiwan, which does not have such restrictions. Ships were allowed to undertake cross-Strait trade as from December 2008, but only in Chinese- and Taiwanese-registered vessels.
