And container traffic through Toamasina, which totalled 104,000TEUs in 2004, is expected to double by 2009.
Work tackled already includes yard reorganisation; establishing proper safety, security and organizational policies for yard and marine operations; developing a proper gate and allied billing operation; manpower orientation and training; and the preparation of an operations manual for clients.
Investment in container handling equipment includes three reachstackers and 17 terminal tractors acquired from Kalmar, 21 terminal trailers, Stinis autotwist spreader systems, and empty handling equipment. This initial investment, equivalent to nearly US$3m, will be supplemented over the next 12 months with a further US$5m outlay for additional reachstackers and the introduction of RTGs, as well as a phased equipment training programme for terminal operations and maintenance staff. IT system deployment is also a priority.
Further infrastructure investment including the rehabilitation of 280m of quay; the berth strengthening to accommodate mobile harbour cranes, will be executed and investment in civil works alone over the next 24 months is expected to exceed US$13m.
