Tauranga merger talk dampened

Port of Tauranga chief executive Mark Cairns has advised his company has had no recent approach from Ports of Auckland or its shareholder, the Auckland Council, on the possibility of merging.

Mr Cairns issued the statement in light of speculation talks could be back on the table with the subject being noted in the minutes of an Auckland Council committee meeting.

In mid 2007, Ports of Auckland’s then shareholder, Auckland Regional Holdings, decided against the proposal despite an independent report identifying it would provide a NZ$50m (US$41.4m) annual benefit.
