Tasmanians fights Melbourne licensing fee

The Tasmanian Freight Logistics Council is considering legal action to block a proposed port licensing fee, which will affect freight moving to Tasmania through Melbourne.

The trade body says that preliminary legal advice suggests the fee is unconstitutional.

The TFLC believes the charge is in effect a tariff increase and a tax on freight, and is unrelated to any licensing function or to any service provided to the Port of Melbourne.

The body is asking for exemption for Tasmanian freight, but if unsuccessful will consider a legal challenge.
