Tauranga shipping lanes mooted

A Bay of Plenty Regional Council review has been launched into the potential of introducing compulsory shipping lanes as a means of best managing shipping movements at the Port of Tauranga.

Prompted by the Rena disaster, the review is being undertaken in close liaison with Maritime New Zealand and the Ministry of Transport.

The regional council has some responsibility for navigation safety within its waters but the review will establish whether the options under consideration would come under local, national or international governance.
