Earlier this year, the new marine pilot business, Australian Pilotage Group, guided its first ship into the Port of Melbourne and said that the shipping industry was being very supportive. It is the first time pilotage competition has existed in the bay in 180 years.
Ports corporation chief executive Rachel Johnson said the corporation welcomed competition but wanted to ensure the best outcomes for all stakeholders in the port community in the changed environment. “It is timely, and makes good sense, to check whether the current policies and regulations, created during a single-provider era, remain relevant in a competitive market.
“Port stakeholders, including the two pilotage services providers, will be canvassed for their views,” she said.
