Esmeraldas could become northern Ecuador hub

The Port of Esmeraldas is being considered as a possible hub to serve the north of Ecuador.

To achieve this, a large container terminal would need to be built to target the larger container ships now passing through the Panama Canal.

Currently, the country lacks port with either draft or facilities to comfortably handle post-panamax vessels.

According to Luis Luna, professor at Quito Andina University: “If two ports are required, one should serve the northern region and the other the southern region, which could mean that Posorja would be built for the south and Esmeraldas for the north.”
