Green kudos for Crystal Cruises
Crystal Cruises’ ‘Crystal Serenity’ and ‘Crystal Symphony’ have helped reduce emissions and improve air quality in and around the Port of Los Angeles (POLA).
The vessels have become the latest ocean-going vessels to be honoured by the port for complying with its 2012 Vessel Speed Reduction Programme (VSRP) by lowering vessel speeds when sailing in and out of the San Pedro Bay.
William Boehm, director of marine compliance, Crystal Cruises, said: “From greener approaches to sailing to our Nothing Overboard policy and You Care, We Care voluntarism programme, we are continually seeking out opportunities to reduce our ecological impact and enhance environmental stewardship wherever we sail.”
The POLA’s programme asks vessels to slow speeds as they approach or depart the port at either 20 miles from Point Fermin, or as far as 40 miles offshore.
In 2012, the VSRP significantly reduced diesel particulate matter by 73 tonnes, sulphur oxide by 740 tonnes and nitrogen oxide emissions by 981 tonnes.
Crystal Cruises has also received the Venice Blue Flag award, Stockholm’s Environmental Buoy Diploma and San Francisco’s Cruise Ship Environmental Award for its environmental efforts.
