Bilbao Port will be the host of GreenPort Congress 2027, delegates at this year’s 21st edition at Portsmouth International Port were told this morning.

One of Spain’s largest and busiest commercial maritime hubs, Bilbao is the capital of Basque Country in northwestern Spain and well-located on the Atlantic and Bay of Biscay maritime corridors.

Surrounded by green mountains, the industrial port city features specialized cargo, liquid/solid bulk, container, and passenger/cruise facilities including three cruise passenger maritime terminals and a ferry passenger terminal for routes to the UK and Ireland, including Portsmouth.

“We are very happy to host Greenport Congress next year in Bilbao,” Ekaitz Lopez Amurrio, CFO and EU Funds Coordinator at Bilbao Port told delegates.

“We are quite an industrial port. We have major public and private investments taking place, and they are at an implementation stage and are going to be almost finished by next year, by 2027. So it’s going to be quite an important moment for us.

“So it’s going to be about how everything connects into a strategy, to decarbonize but also to be more competitive, more resilient, and how to make it as a community. That’s going to be our challenge, and how to upscale this and how to share it. So next year we hope to have open discussions. We need ideas. We need to understand what barriers you have as well, what difficulties, how we connect all this, and how we learn.”

Bilbao is also well-known for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which sparked a tourism boom when it opened in 1997 and led to a new dock being built to meet the increasing demand in cruise ship traffic.
