Irish Sea spawns expansion plans

Liverpool, Belfast and Cork are all gearing up for expansion with plans being laid to improve facilities at all three ports. Liverpool hopes to get the go-ahead for construction of its £ 80m post-panamax container terminal which would increase capacity to nearly 1.5m TEUs.

Belfast plans to invest £106m in improving facilities over the next five years.

Receiving upwards of 9,000 vessels a year, the port sees around two-thirds of Northern Ireland’s seaborne trade, and a quarter of that for Ireland as a whole. A new terminal is planned there.

Cork meanwhile is advancing to Statutory Approval Stage, the next phase of port development in Ringaskiddy. The development of a container terminal and multi-purpose ro-ro berth are planned.
