Lekki wins Nigerian hub hearts

Nigerian Ports Authority and the Lagos state government have given promoters of the Lagos Free-trade Zone approval to build a private the seaport at Lekki, 60 kilometres from Lagos.

The work will cost $6bn and the port is slated to become operational by 2011.

It will be Nigeria’s first deep sea port and is expected to develop as a regional hub, especially for containers. A contract is to be signed in March 2009, allowing channel dredging to commence in July 2010.

In its initial phase, the port will handle 1.4m teu and 3m tonnes of break bulk cargo.
