Ghana LNG terminal gets off ground
Sub-Saharan Africa’s first LNG import terminal at a port in Ghana has received a floating regasification unit (FRU) unit that will shortly enable it to offer services to LNG carriers.
Tema LNG Terminal Company, (TLTC), established by Helios Investment Partners in November 2017 to develop, construct and operate the Tema LNG facility at the Port of Terma, took delivery of the FRU, built by Jiangnan Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
“Once operational, this FRU will allow the Tema LNG facility to receive, re-gasify, store and deliver roughly 1.7 million tonnes of LNG a year – 30% of Ghana’s general capacity,” said project manager Edmund Agyeman-Duah in a statement.
Shell to supplier LNG
Shell will supply LNG to Ghana National Petroleum Corp. (GNPC) under a long-term contract.
TLTC awarded Spanish firm Reganosa Servicios SL the contract for the operation and maintenance of the FRU, floating storage units and the associated 6 km gas pipeline linking the terminal to the existing pipeline network.
On its website, Helios said TLTC will employ an innovative combination of a purpose-built Floating Regasification Unit twinned with an existing LNG carrier, to receive, store and regasify the LNG. This system provides Ghana with all the functionality of a large scale FSRU-based terminal with added flexibility of operations yet at a significantly reduced cost.
PIDG company, the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) is lending US$31m over 10 years to Access LNG B.V., a provider of specialist floating LNG infrastructure, to support the construction of the LNG facility.
