Training aids oil spill liability competency

Employees from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) were among 70 participants who underwent training under The Global Initiative for West, Central and Southern Africa (GI WACAF) – a collaboration between IMO and IPIECA to strengthen oil spill response capacity in west, central and southern Africa.

The workshop, held in Lagos from 10-12 September, focused on how to implement IMO conventions dealing with liability. It included technical presentations, case studies and table-top exercises on cost evaluation and compensation procedures.

The event, run by experts from IOPC Funds and ITOPF, was the first to be organised by the Nigerian Maritime Administration & Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

Apart from NPA employees, the participants at the workshop were from national authorities, federal government and the oil and maritime industries
