Clean power barges launch in US
US marine transportation company Centerline Logistics has teamed up with naval architecture firm Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) on a barge-based solution for ports lacking shorepower.
The partnership focuses on EBDG’s innovative Clean Harbor Alternative Mobile Power (CHAMP) barge, a floating platform designed to reduce ship emissions by up to 93% while vessels are in port.
“EBDG’s CHAMP barge is a groundbreaking solution for reducing port emissions,” said Michael Complita, vice president of Strategic Expansion at Elliott Bay Design Group.
“Our team developed CHAMP to deliver multimegawatt clean power wherever it’s needed, without relying on permanent shoreside installations.”
The CHAMP barges will initially feature methanol-fuelled generator technology, offering power capacities between 6 and 16 MW. As a US Coast Guard-inspected vessel, it eliminates the need for shoreside permitting or infrastructure, offering a streamlined solution for domestic ports.
“CHAMP offers ports and shipping companies a practical and sustainable solution for emission reduction,” said Ravi Sekhon, director of Engineering & Sustainability at Centerline Logistics.
“As ports prioritise emissions reductions, finding ways to manage all sources of negative carbon emissions, both underway and moored, becomes crucial.”
The two companies plan to reveal the locations and deployments of the CHAMP fleet in 2025.
