Port workers at Egypt’s Sokhna’s Port began planned general strikes at the weekend, with the promise of strife for operator DP World.

A planned attack on the hotly disputed Mubarak Port in Kuwait is the latest incident in a long line of protests against the development, which, Baghdad claims, will strangle its shipping lanes.

DP World has announced that it is to expand its flagship Jebel Ali port, creating an additional 4m teu. This will take total capacity to 19m teu by 2014.

This morning, DP World announced a solid third quarter with gross handling volumes up to 14.4 million teu – 10% up on the same quarter last year.
