Crane order boost

Peel Ports has put out a £17 million tender for two new cranes at Greenock Ocean Terminal (GOT) on Scotland’s west coast.

This is the largest single investment made at the container terminal since it opened in 1969 and comes amid ongoing construction of a border control post being built to meet new legislative requirements following Brexit.

“The commission of two new cranes will be significant for Greenock Ocean Terminal and will contribute to the continuing growth seen in recent times,” said Clydeport Port director at Peel Ports Group, Jim McSporran.

“This investment also highlights our commitment to ensuring Greenock Ocean Terminal continues to provide an efficient service for our customers.”

Located on the Firth of Clyde, the terminal handles 60,000 containers per year, which represents a third of all containers coming into the country. The terminal also recently created additional storage capacity of up to 2,500 teu in response to increasing demand.

As part of the transition, GOT will later decommission its crane no.3, replacing it in the short term with a multi-docker crane that specialises in the handling of forest products.

Once the contract is awarded work is expected to take 18 months after which cranes no. 1 and 2 will also be decommissioned.
