Forklift management tips

While fleet management systems can aide analysis and monitoring of forklift truck usage and driver activity, ports should make better use of the captured data for greater gains.Paul Sercombe, sales director of Transmon Engineering Ltd, has compiled a ‘top tips’ list to help port equipment managers get the most from their fleet management system:

• Set clear objectives and define what you want to know – like faults, incidents, driver identity and idle time.
• Choose the right method to get the data and make sure software is user friendly.
• Analyse the reports, then respond accordingly (we’ve all done the opposite!)
• Record idling time and make sure that a truck is not left on when not in use – and put a system in place to optimise running hours.
• Check that the installation and support details on the units give you the best deal for your circumstances.
• Manage operators as well as equipment – and ensure drivers perform daily safety checks.
