To combat the problem, AtView has introduced a full CCTV “health check”, comprising a one-day, on-site CCTV survey by an expert consultant, and a written report reviewing equipment performance and operational practices, identifying faults and problems and making relevant recommendations. The CCTV health check costs just £300.

Often, the first the CCTV owner knows about a problem is when an incident occurs and images either weren’t captured or recorded, or the quality is so poor as to render them unusable.

“A health check is a good way to ensure that you are not going to make this very expensive mistake, ” says AtView consultant Patrick Dixon.

“But many CCTV system owners are already aware of some of the gaps in their knowledge – and the performance of their system.

In many cases, the original installer is no longer available to maintain the system or correct any problems. Often documentation is poor or nonexistent, making it difficult for someone else to pick up maintenance and leaving operators unable to properly use the system, ” he adds.

“System owners should also be aware that there have been several major improvements to CCTV system technology over the past couple of years – particularly in the crucial area of image recording.”
