Kalmar helps boost growth at Tecon Santos

Tecon Santos, operated by Santos Brasil Participações, is located in the largest port in Latin America and is Brazil’s biggest container terminal, covering an area of almost 600,000 sqm and with an annual handling capacity of 2 million TEU.

Kalmar equipment is prominent in the Tecon Santos fleet, which includes rubber-tyred gantry cranes, empty container handlers and terminal tractors.

Marlos Silva Tavares, director of operations at Santos Brasil, Tecon Santos explained that the order was part of the terminal’s expansion programme to address recent growth in demand.

“Since Kalmar equipment already makes up such a large proportion of our existing fleet, it was natural that we turned to them once again to support us with our extensive fleet expansion programme.”

“We have seen demand rise sharply during 2018, handling 2.9% more containers in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2017,“ he added.

The Kalmar Ottawa T2 has faster fifth-wheel lifting to speed up trailer handling, a completely redesigned cab and easy-access service points to speed up routine checks and servicing, said Cargotec.

The order was booked in Cargotec’s third quarter 2018 order intake, with delivery of the machines scheduled to take place through the first quarter of 2019.
