Navis is to provide the Terminal Operating System at APM Terminals’ new Virginia terminal on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth. The 291-acre greenfield site is the country’s largest, single private investment in container terminals and is expected to be completely developed in 2007. The terminal will set a new benchmark in the container handling industry, establishing new performance standards of operation. For example, the gate complex will have 24 lanes in Phase 1 with the capacity to expand to 32 lanes. The berth is designed to accept up to 12 quay cranes. A railhead will be built at the northwestern corner of the terminal with the ability to have 12 tracks if necessary.
