Open source signifies greater collaboration
Netherlands-based HITT is poised to release open-source software aimed at simplifying the processing of port data.
Current practise sees port authorities providing information on arrival times and the position of ships on request, which as a non-automated process is viewed as time-consuming and open to miscommunication and delays.
HITT’s Inter VTS Exchange Format (IVEF) open source software standardises port information, which the developer claims will support “safer and more efficient traffic management”.
The software will be released to logistical organisations, allowing authorised users to immediately interpret and process relevant information from port authorities.
HITT has already successfully established exchange of information between parties such as the Dutch Coast Guard, major Dutch VTS centres, the offshore industry, and pilots.
