RTG cranes to aid efficiency at African port

Liebherr Container Cranes will supply the RTG cranes to DP World’s Berbera development at the Port of Berbera in Somaliland, an autonomous region of Somalia.

Designed for maximum loading conditions, the RTGs are six containers plus a truck lane wide and will stack one over five containers high. The machines are supplied with DGPS autosteering and stack profiling. The variable speed diesel engines also help reduce running costs and emissions.

The machines incorporate Liebherr’s unique eight rope reeving no-sway-system, Liebherr drive systems and simultaneous drive motion to maximise productivity.

Gantry cameras as well as a laser anti-collision system bring safety enhancements to operations.

Remote maintenance and Liebherr’s custom diagnostics and maintenance software, DiaMon3D, are included.

The cranes are due to be ready for operation before the end of 2020.

DP World Berbera already operates three Liebherr LHM 420 mobile harbour cranes, which went into service in early 2019. The new cranes are part of a phased expansion of the site, with phase one including a new 400m quay and a 250,000m2 yard extension.

In 2016, DP World won a 30-year concession with an automatic 10-year extension for the management and development of a multi-purpose port project at the Port of Berbera, which is owned and operated by the Republic of Somaliland.
