SIMTAG and Savi cooperate
SIMTAG, a consortium of leading companies in manufacturing, transportation and services to logistics involved in the development of an intermodal portal solution, and Savi Technology, have announced a joint field trial based on an existing supply chain transporting meat products from Namibia to Tilbury. The supply chain is part of the SST for Africa project, running as part of the Smart and Secure Tradelanes (SST) programme.
In the trials, containers are fitted with RFID-based electronic security tags that communicate with an Internet-enabled global information network. Updates on location and security status are received whenever a tagged container passes through the infrastructure along the journey corridor, including ports. SIMTAG obtains relevant information from the Savi Transportation Security System (TSS) to automate the creation of a Journey Plan. The SIMTAG Journey Plan is automatically updated whenever the Savi TSS system receives a report on position or security status of the consignment – so called ‘Journey Events’. Event data can be added via the SIMTAG portal or other connection application at any appropriate time.
Francis Frost, of SIMTAG co-ordinator, Thomas Miller & Co. Ltd. , says: “Both parties benefit from this trial. SAVI is demonstrating its ability to connect to a wider set of supply chain functionality and a broader user base.
SIMTAG, designed to be independent of the data collection method, is aggregating a range of data on movement, status and supply chain activity from a variety of sources. SAVI provides end-to-end visibility solutions, but in this particular trade lane, SIMTAG is providing ‘final mile’ data and access to other services.”
